Andrew Safley embarked from Greenock, Scotland and arrived in New York on June 21, 1834 along with Andrew's widowed mother, Isabella (Gilmour) Safley, and his cousin James Safley. Andrew and James traveled to LaGrange County, Indiana sometime before October of 1835. Later, Andrew moved to Linn County, Iowa.
While engaged in farming in Iowa, Andrew was also an accomplished blacksmith. He erected a large steam sawmill on his premises.
For the 1860 federal census enumerated in June of that year, Andrew was listed in Linn Township (Linn County) Iowa in the Mount Vernon postal area. He was then a 48-year-old farmer. The record verified that he had been born in Scotland. His real estate was then worth $8900. Living with himwas his wife Margaret (Hunter), their 6 children, and Andrew's mother, Isabel (Gilmour/Gilmore) Safley.
Andrew went west to California in 1865. He died in July, 1880, in Calistoga (Napa Valley) California at 67 years, 5 months, and 18 days of age.
