John R. Safley arrived in the U.S. from Scotland in 1830 according to his obituary. He lived at Waterford, New York, in Indiana (?), and in Knox County, Illinois. He settled in Iowa in 1842.

For the 1860 federal census enumerated in June of that year, John was listed in Linn Township (Linn County) Iowa in the Mount Vernon postal area. He was then a 52-year-old farmer with real estate worth $4500. The record verified that he had been born in Scotland. Living with him was his wife Isabella (Crawford).

John died in February, 1881, in Mount Vernon (Linn County) Iowa at 74 years, 7 months, and 8 days of age.
