Doris A. (Phillips) Busard Douglas, 90, of Otto, NC, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019 in Highlands, NC. She was born on October 13, 1928 in Fort Madison, IA to the late James H. and Alease (Lunn) Phillips. She was married in 1948 to Charles W. Busard, Jr. and in 1965 to James L. Douglas. Doris is survived by her husband, James "Jim" Douglas; sister Janie; children, Nancy, Jenny, Sue, Donald and Robert; grandchildren Robert, Randy and Alison; 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Louise "Lou", brothers Robert "Bob", Howard "Bud" and David. Doris moved to Miami, FL in 1960 then to Loxahatchee, FL and eventually to Fernandina Beach, FL. Her career was that of an Executive Legal Secretary. Upon retiring, she moved to North Carolina and wintered in Florida. Doris was an expert mycologist, and loved to hike in the woods, having climbed Pickens' Nose at age 78. She was passionate about all forms of music, folk dancing, gardening, canning; an avid reader; traveled to the Mediterranean, Yugoslavia, Crete, Italy and Greece. She was renowned for her homemade apple pies and pear jam, sharing with family and friends. She was an original member of the National Organization For Women and was vocal about her political viewpoints. She was a member of the local VFW Women's Auxiliary. Doris' daughters would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses at Four Seasons Hospice and especially Trina and Lacey of Highlands-Cashiers Hospital for their compassionate care and kindness to mom. For her friends who loved her, when you see an apple or pear or walnut tree, or see a bluejay, let it bring a smile to your face, and think of her with love. She loved her children, her animals and will be sadly missed. Bryant-Grant Funeral Home of Franklin, NC was in charge of arrangements.
