Thomas Short, a resident of Keokuk for nearly a half century, and a man held in high esteem throughout the whole city, passed away at his home 703 South Seventh street, at 4:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon following a long illness. Mr. Short had been in failing health for over a year. Death was the result of the infirmities of old age and a complication of troubles.

Mr. Short first came to Keokuk in the year 1869 at the beginning of the building of the old government canal and locks here and was employed as a contractor on the job during the years of its construction. Following the completing of the work, Mr. Short was in the general contracting business here for many years, but had been retired for some time.

Thomas Short was born in Tipperary, Ireland, in August, 1835, and was in his eighty-second year. He came to the United States in January, 1866, settling first in the state of Ohio where several years were spent. He came to Keokuk from that state and had been a resident of this city ever since.

His marriage to Mary Cuniff occurred in October, 1877, here. The ceremony was performed in St. Peter's Catholic church by Rev. Father Riley. His wife survives with two children, William Short, proprietor of the Rose confectionary store, and Mrs. Kate Mannings, both of this city. There is also a grandson, Bernard Short, and a nephew Patrick H. Haynes of the Avery Supply company, Avery, Ia.

Mr. Short was always a devout member of St. Peter's church and was a man who possessed a wide acquaintance in Keokuk and vicinity. His many friends here have learned with regret of his death and have extended their sympathy to the family. The decedent was known and respected for his strict honesty in his business dealings, his unfailing steadfastness to principal, his generosity and his friendly and warm hearted nature. He was a lover of his home and family and his loss will be deeply felt by those who were nearest and dearest to him.

The funeral is to be held on Monday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Peter's Catholic church.
