Edward C. Benedict Sr.

Edward C. Benedict Sr., 80, of Fairfield, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield after a short battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk. Burial, with military rites, will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with family meeting with friends at that time.

Mr. Benedict was born Oct. 6, 1933, in Keokuk, the son of Frank and Garnet Schaffer Benedict. He married Shirley Ann Alberts Aug. 7, 1955, in Keokuk. She survives.

Mr. Benedict served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, where he achieved the rank of specialist 3rd class.

He enjoyed woodworking, painting, writing poetry and studying his Bible.

Before moving to Fairfield, he was a member of the Salvation Army where he was always ready to volunteer for any job needing done. He also taught the adult Sunday school class.

Mr. Benedict was employed by Keokuk Steel Casings, AMI Pipe and Supply and Glaser-Crandell Company in Mattawan, Michigan.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Edward Benedict Jr. and wife Barbara of Keokuk, Frank Benedict and wife Jill of Winfield and Michael Benedict and wife Lucy of Fairfield; one daughter, Kim Schlatter and husband Mike of Kahoka; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Benedict of Edina, Missouri, and John Baxter of Keokuk; and two sisters, Jackie Winn of Keokuk and Vesta Todd of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepparents Bill and Alice Baxter; one brother, and three sisters.
