Tri-City Evening Star, Davenport, Iowa Tuesday December 6, 1904
Leavenworth, Kan., Dec. 5--M.E. Hellwig, a resident of Keokuk, Ia., committed suicide at Two-Mile creek, a lonely spot on the Fort Leavenworth reservation. He walked to the reservation and shot himself in the right temple with a revolver. Hellwig came here Tuesday and registered at a hotel under the name of M.E. Hart. It is said that he was in the leather and saddlery business in Keokuk at one time and of late has been a traveling salesman. He complained yesterday morning of not feeling well. Hellwig left several letters addressed to relatives, presumably telling of his contemplated suicide. He was 35 years old and it is said he had a wife and child living in Keokuk.
