The Keokuk Constitution of the 21st contains the following:
On Tuesday evening of last week, Henry Morton went into the house of one Butler in this city, and found there Richard Craig (both colored) and without exchange of words hit Craig over the head with a cane or club three times, fracturing and crushing Craig’s skull. Craig languished from the effects of the wounds up to last Sunday afternoon, when he died. Yesterday Esquire Martin, acting coroner, held an inquest on the body of the deceased, at which time Dr. Hughes made a post mortem examination. From the nature of the wounds and the evidence produced before the coroner’s jury, they found that the deceased, Richard Craig, came to his death buy a blow or lows feloniously struck with a cane or club in the hands of Henry Morton, which fractured and broke in the skull of the said Craig, producing death. A warrant was issued for his arrest on the charge of murder, and he is now in jail awaiting an examination.
