STEMPEL, HERMAN F., M. D., physician and U. S. Revenue Gauger ; was born in Prussia, July 24, 1824. He was brought up and received his education there, and studied medicine; he emigrated to America in 1847: came to Iowa and settled in Ft. Madison the same year ; practiced medicine until 1852 ; then held the office of Deputy County Treasurer and Recorder for eleven years, until January, 1864, in 1869, he was appointed U. S. Revenue Guager, and since then has held that position, and has also practiced his profession. He married Charlotte Walter, from Hanover, Germany, Nov. 10, 1853; she died in 1876, leaving six children — Eugene, Arthur, Valeska. Wolfgang, Willie and Herman ; they lost three children.
