LEECH, E. J., Deputy Clerk of the United States Courts ; came to Fort Madison in 1850. He served nearly a year as Deputy County Recorder, and from August, 1852, to 1854; when he came to Keokuk, he served as Deputy Clerk of the District Court ; afterward he held the position of Clerk of the District Court. Mr. Leech was Secretary of the School Board at Fort Madison. The large school building at that place was built while he was connected with the Board. In August, 1861, he enlisted in the 3d I. V. C. : served about one year as First Lieutenant of Co. C ; engaged in the practice of law in Keokuk, from the latter part of 1864 to 1867. From 1867 to 1871, he held the position of Deputy Clerk of the District and Circuit Courts. He has held his present position since 1871. For six years, he was Secretary of the Keokuk Loan and Building Association ; on account of pressure of official business, he was compelled to decline reelection at the late meeting of the Association in March, 1879.
