DOERR, CHARLES, Secretary of the Fort Madison & N. W. R. R. ; was born in the Duchy of Nassau, Germany, Jan. 13, 1831; he was brought up there and learned the trade of stone-cutter and mason ; he came to America in March, 1851, and was in the employ of the Illinois Central R. R. Co. ; he came to Iowa and located in Fort Madison in August, 1855, and engaged in building bridges and contracting ; in 1862, he was elected Clerk of the Courts, and served two years ; in the spring of 1866, he was appointed Clerk of the Courts to fill an unexpired term, and was elected to the same office in the fall of the same year, and re-elected in the fall of 1868; in 1871, he bought the ferry and managed that for six years ; he was Secretary of the Fort Madison, Farmington & Western R. R., and when it was merged into the Burlington & Southwestern R. R., he held the position of Secretary until it was completed ; he has been actively identified with the interests of this county for the past twenty years. He married Miss Catherine Magerkurth, from Rhenish Bavaria, Germany, in August, 1857 ; they have eight children— Charles, Nettie, Edward, Philip, Albert, Kuno, Elsie and baby.
