Fort Madison)BUTTERFIELD, MANLY T., Clerk of the State Penitentiary; was born in Franklin Co., Me., June 29, 1836 ; his parents removed to Dearborn Co., Ind., where he lived until 1857, when he came to Iowa, located in Lee Co., and engaged in teaching school; was afterward engaged in farming ; he continued farming and teaching until 1872 ; then removed to Fort Madison and was in the mercantile business for six years and was appointed to his present position. He married Miss Sarah E. Tibbetts, a native of Indiana, Oct. 28, 1858 ; Mr. Butterfield has held the office of County Supervisor and other town and school offices.
