On Tuesday of this week occurred the funeral of one of the old settlers of Whittemore, Mrs. S.G. Thompson. Services were held at the M.E. church and the remains laid to rest in the Protestant cemetery north of town. The pall bearers were, G.E. Boyle, J.M. Farley, Joe DeGraw, Wm. Keepers, John Fairburn and Anthony Schmitt.
Mrs. Thompson's death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F.D. Solomon, at Spencer on Saturday, April 29, 1911, at 3 p.m., following an illness of but a few days. The remains were brought to Whittemore Monday evening.
Deceased was born in Maryville, Kentucky, February 30, 1830, and at the time of her death was past 81 years of age.
In September, 1864, she was united in marriage to Thomas Thompson, and to this union twelve children were born - seven girls and five boys; six of whom survive their parents, being: Robert Thompson of South Dakota; Charles Thompson of Willow Springs, Missouri; F.L. Thompson of Round Lake, Minnesota; Mrs. M.A. Sabin of Algona, Iowa; Mrs. J.E. Beattie of St. Paul, Minn.; and Mrs. F.D. Solomon of Spencer, Iowa.
Her eldest daughter, Mrs. M.L. Mayhew, died at about the same hour and on the same day as her mother and the daughter's funeral was held Monday. Mrs. Mayhew lived at Blairstown, Iowa, and was laid to rest in the cemetery near that place.
Mrs. Thompson was well known to all old settlers and residents of Whittemore as she came here from Elkader, Iowa, in 1889 and has since made this village her home.
Deceased was a member of the Congregational church and was a good christian woman.
