Algona - A funeral service for Dorothy Muckey, 93, of Algona, was held today (Thursday, June 26, 2014) at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Algona with Rev. Steve McElroy officiating. Interment followed at Riverview Cemetery in Algona.

Dorothy Muckey, 93, died June 23, 2014, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City. Dorothy was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Council Bluffs. She was the daughter of Julius and Maude (Blacketer) Blinkman.

She married Stanley H. Muckey on Aug. 25, 1940, at her parents’ home in Fairmont, Minn.

She is survived by her children: JoAnn (Willis) Erdman, Santa Ana, Calif.; Nancy (Jim) Shipler, Spokane, Mo.; Pat (Mike) Dreyer, Cedar Falls; and Jim Muckey, Baytown, Texas. There are eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Darrell; infant son John Charles; grandson Gary and great-grandson David.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Over the years Dorothy served on boards and committees providing services to others, including: Kossuth County Hospital; Business and Professional Women; Girl Scouts; American Cancer Society; Kossuth County Hospice; Compassionate Friends; The Open Door; Iowa Lakes Community College Advisory Board for Women’s Issues; Algona Boys and Girls Club: the Care Review Committee for Good Samaritan Care Center and an honorary member of PEO.

Throughout her journalism career she belonged to Iowa Press Women and the National Federation of Press Women, receiving state and national awards for her newspaper articles.

After her retirement from the Algona Upper Des Moines, she continued to do free-lance writing for the newspaper. Her 56-year journalism career allowed her the opportunity to work with and meet many wonderful people. She was a woman of strong faith and lived life to the fullest.
