Jesse D. Foster died at his home in Whittemore at 1:30 a. m. Thursday, May 10, 1906, at the advanced age of 86 years. The funeral was held at 10:30 Friday morning, at the Baptist church and the interment made in the Algona cemetery
Jesse D. Foster was born in Warren Co., Penn., November 6, 1820. His early life was spent in his native state, and it was not until the year 1861 that he moved, when he came to Iowa, settling in Clayton county where he lived till the fall of 1864, when he came to Algona. He lived in Algona and on a farm west of there until 1879, when he moved to Whittemore, where he has since resided. Deceased was twice married, the first time to Betsy Ann Cowles, in 1848, at Warren, Pennsylvania. To this union one child was born, who is now Mrs. Rachael Cowan of Algona. After the death of his first wife Mr. Foster was married, in 1853, January 21st, to Hannah Jane Brocaw, who was a constant attendant at his side during his last illness. Six children resulted from this marriage, five of whom are living. They are: Florence Lillian, who died in infancy; Mrs. Mary J. Hawkins, of Goldfield, Iowa; Mrs. Eva J. Abbott, died in Algona, January 15, 1878; Mrs. Lilly Haas, Whittemore; Mrs. Kate Wolfe, Cazenovia, Minn., Miss Charlotte Foster, Whittemore; and Dorson J. Foster of Ringsted. Mr. Foster was a member of the Baptist church from the time of its organization in Whittemore, and was a descon in that religious organization at the time of his death.
Deceased was indeed a pioneer. In his 42 years residence in Kossuth county he witnessed many changes and endured many hardships. He erected the first residence in Whittemore, and is credited with being, perhaps, the oldest settler here. Always honest, industrious and courteous, his life was a model, and while he never accumulated a great quantity of this world's goods he was rich in the good will of his neighbors and fellow men. No man can say an ill word of Jesse D. Foster, he was upright in his dealings with men, devoted to his wife and family and faithful to his religious duties as he knew them. Peace to his ashes.
