Merle Voigt was born on May 20, 1926, in Iowa City and died May 26, 2022, at 96 years of age.
Merle resided in Fenton, Iowa (Kossuth County) his entire life except for service in the U.S. Army, primarily serving in Panama in 1947-48.
In 1949, Merle married Lois Hantelman and they remained married for 73 years. They had 4 children. He loved the comfort of his home and family. Merle loved his hometown and never wanted to leave.
Merle worked as an independent oil jobber with Phillips 66 for his entire working career. A consummate volunteer, for decades he was a member of the Fenton Fire Dept., the Fenton First Responder’s Unit, American Legion, First United Methodist Church, and worked at the Fenton Sweet Corn Days. He golfed, had a great time playing cards and enjoyed a good laugh. He also enjoyed gardening and bird watching. In retirement, he took up woodworking and his creations can be seen in many houses, patios, and front yards.
Survivors include Lois Voigt (wife), children -Teresa Bomhoff, Terri Henriksen, Val Cole, and Vance Voigt (Glenda). Grandchildren – Torrey Holst, Tyson Bomhoff (Janet), Jenny Bengs (Tim), Tessa Schmidt (Tracy Thomas), Ryan Voigt and Alexandra Bomhoff. There are 6 great grandchildren – Cayden Holst, Scarlett Bomhoff, Colten Bengs, Hunter Bengs, Joey Thompson and Dakota Thompson and 3 great great grandchildren – Finnegan Bengs and Emmalyne Lovejoy, and Liam Thompson. Siblings – Peggy Micile, Louanne Domek and Cindy McDonald.
Those who passed before Merle are his parents, 4 sisters, 1 brother, 2 grandchildren, and a host of friends and family.
Memorial donations may be made to the Fenton United Methodist Church.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at the Fenton American Legion Building in Fenton, Iowa, with Pastor Judy DePue officiating. Interment was at the Fenton Methodist Cemetery at Fenton.
