BURIED AT S.C,
Swea City, Jan. 6—Mrs. Wm. Ewing received a message Saturday from Bayard of the death of her father, John Shaffer [Jan. 2, 1932]. Mr. Shaffer has made his home with Mrs. Ewing here a large part of the time for many years, but was at the home his son, Victor, at the time of his death. John Shaffer, one of the few remaining Civil war veterans, was born in Broadheadsville, Pa., May 3, 1839. He enlisted In Company D, 81st regiment, Pennsylvania, volunteer Infantry, in 1863. During his service he fought in eight battles, and was wounded in the battle of Cold Harbor. He was honorably discharged at Arlington Heights January 29, 1865 after the close of the war. In 1880 he married Mrs. Minerva Home, and he is survived by one son Victor L. There are also three stepdaughters, Mrs Addie Ewing, Swea City, Mrs. Mattie Parkman, Sioux Falls, S. D., Mrs. Cliff Ocheltree, of Bayard, two step sons, J. L. Hess, of San Diego, Calif., and John Hess, of Pennsylvania, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was 92 years and eight months old at time of his death. Funeral services were held at the Swea Methodist church, the Rev. B. L. Weaver in charge, and burial was made in the Harrison cemetery. The local American Legion gave him military burial.
