Mathias F. Amfahr; 12-19-1898 to 6-4-1979
Mathias F. “Matt” Amfahr, 80, of Algona, died Monday evening at the Palo Alto County Memorial Hospital in Emmetsburg. Funeral Mass for Mr. Amfahr will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church with the Mass concelebrated by Monsignor W.B. Bauer and Monsignor Lawrence Hoffman. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery with Wilson’s of Algona in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers are Don Winkel, Joe Studer, William Ludwig, William Hood, John Elbert and Larry Youngwirth. Honorary bearers are Lawrence Winkel, Tony Schmidt, Joe Studer, Henry Thompson, John Weydert, Richard Youngwirth, John Grandgenett, Charles Beringer and members of the Knights of Columbus. Born at Jesup, Ia. Dec. 19, 1898, Matt was a son of William P. and Anna Reuter Amfahr. He attended schools in Jesup and worked in that area until his marriage to Pearl Clue June 30, 1926. Following their marriage, he farmed south of Waterloo until 1931 when he began employment as a sales representative for the Fuller Brush Co. in the Waterloo area. He was transferred to Algona in 1933 and made district manager of the Fuller Brush Co. He retired from that company in 1958 and was employed at Garrigan High School for a time before working at St. Cecelia’s parish and school. Mrs. Amfahr died in 1963 and it was in 1969 that he began working with his son-in-law on a farm near Cylinder. He is survived by two children: a son, Lt. Col. Harold Amfahr, who is stationed at Cheyenne, Wyo. with the Air Force, and Ramona, Mrs. Richard C. Thompson of Cylinder. There are eight grandchildren. One brother, Tony of Jesup, also survives. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, an infant son, five sisters and six brothers. Mr. Amfahr was a member of St. Cecelia’s Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.Algona Upper Des Moines, Iowa; June 7, 1979
