Call's Grove, Oct. 5, 1854

Bro. Asa:

As I have a good chance to send to the office, I conclude to write. I've had a short turn of fever but am now entirely recovered with the exception of being a little weak. I've not accomplished much yet. I've been looking for you some for a few days, back. The old man from Indiana that came up from Fort Des Moines died here when I was sick and his family have gone back. Some men from Cedar River have claimed on Oscar's claim. I heard of them and went over as soon as I heard of their trespass but they had gone. They made about a ton of hay and laid the foundation of a house. I found on their stakes, "C. Crow claims this Grove (Deer Grove) and 80 acres of prairie adjoining on the East. Will make it all right with Mr. Call." I am afraid I can't help George and Oscar keep their claim. If I had not been sick I should have had a house up on Oscar's before Crow came on. Mr. Maxwell and Hill went over to order Crow off the same day I did but they said by all appearances they had just started. Maxwell starts for Iowa City next Monday with a good horse team. He will have about a half a load back. I conclude it will be a good chance if you want to come or send out. He will inquire at the Park House for a letter for Levi Maxwell. If you want to see him, you had better leave your address soon as he may be mail time. A load of groceries arrived last night marked "O. Easton, Call's Grove, Iowa" from Keokuk.

There are lots of Yankees from Iowa and Cedar River here every few days looking for claims mill seats, county seats, etc. I think that is Crow's idea for claiming. He appears by report to be an intelligent, business sort of a man.
