JOHN STEIN

John Stein is numbered among the enterprising and successful farmers of Kossuth county where he is engaged in cultivation of a good tract of land on section 34, Plum Creek township. He is a native of Germany, his birth having occurred at Kempten on the Rhine, August 19, 1869, and is a son of Philip Jacob and Teresa (Wolfsberger) Stein. The father was a farmer by occupation and the owner of a large vineyard, to which he gave his constant attention during life. He passed away in his native country at the time the subject of this sketch was eleven years of age. He had a family of seven children, four of whom are living: Martin, who resides in Chokio, Minnesota; Teresa, the wife of Martin Rammer of Plum Creek township; Katie, who married Bertel Mathison and resides in Nevada, Iowa; and John, who is the subject of this review. Some time after the father's death Mrs. Stein gave her hand in marriage to Jacob John, and to that union four children were born, two of whom are living: Hugo, of Tama county, Iowa; and Frank.

John Stein was reared at home and received his early education in the schools of his native land and at the age of fifteen emigrated to America. For one year following his arrival in the new world he was a student in the Mankato University. He then removed to Kossuth county, locating in Algona, and was there for a number of years engaged in teaming. He then rented a farm situated directly west of his present location in Plum Creek township and was engaged in the cultivation of that property for a period of four years, after which he purchased his present farm of eighty acres located on section 34, Plum Creek township, where he established his home and has since continued to reside.

Mr. Stein was united in marriage in 1900 to Miss Rosa Ruba, and they have one daughter, Katherine. He is affiliated with the republication party and has been assessor of Plum Creek township for the past four years. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus of Algona, and he and his wife are members of the Catholic church. Mr. Stein is one of the respected and enterprising farmers of Plum Creek township and is a man whose integrity of character has gained for him the high esteem and good-will of all with whom he comes in contact.
