Biography reproduced from page 432 of the History of Kossuth and Humboldt Counties, Iowa published in 1884:
Joseph Osterbauer is a native of Austria, born Aug. 12, 1855. When seven years of age he came to America with his mother, who was a widow. She died soon after landing in this country, and he was left an orphan. He lived around and worked on a farm until twenty-four years of age. In 1875 he came to Kossuth county, and stopped for a short time in Algona. In 1877 he purchased eighty acres of land in Algona township, section 7, and moved thereon. He afterwards purchased another eighty acres on the same section. Mr. Osterbauer was married to Kate Walters. This union has been blessed with three children—Mary, Tracy and Annie. It can truly be said that Mr. Osterbauer is one of the most energetic and enterprising your farmers in the county.
