Biography reproduced from page 519 of the History of Kossuth and Humboldt Counties, Iowa published in 1884:
Daniel Rice was born Oct. 25, 1837, in Herkimer Co., N. Y., where he lived until 1857, and then started for California in June, by way of the Isthmus, being four weeks on the journey. He remained in California six years, farming and lumbering, then returned by the same route to New York, and stayed one year at home. In January, 1864, he came west, settling on section 20, township 96, range 28, where he has since lived, owning 155 acres of find land, raising grain and caring for all kinds of stock. Mr. Rice was county supervisor ten years, and is now township treasurer. He was married Sept. 19, 1863, to Sylvania Griffin, born in Herkimer Co., N. Y. They have five children—Clark, Lora, Forest, Minnie and Caroline. In politics, he is a republican.
