Biography reproduced from page 201 of Volume II of the History of Kossuth County written by Benjamin F. Reed and published in 1913:
Honored and respected by all, no citizen of Algona occupies a more enviable position in financial and business circles that Colman Taylor Chubb, now the president of the Algona State Bank. He certainly deserves much credit for what he has accomplished, as he entered this bank as office boy and has gradually worked his way upward. He was born June 23, 1870, on the Chubb farm a mile and a half south of Algona, his parents being Charles C. and Hattie M. (Taylor) Chubb.
In the acquirement of his education Mr. Chubb attended the public schools until graduated from the Algona high school with the class of 1888. He afterward entered the Northern Iowa Normal School and was graduated in 1890. He afterward completed a course in the Spencerian Business College of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by graduation with the class of 1893. In the meantime he had entered upon his business career in connection with banking, securing the position of office boy in the Algona State Bank on the 1st of October, 1891. His experience in this connection made him realize the value of thorough training for a business career and he, therefore, pursued his commercial course. In 1894 he was promoted to the position of bookkeeper and in 1898 was made assistant cashier. On the 3d of March, 1908, he was promoted to the position of cashier and on the 15th of July, 1911, became president. His previous experience, covering every phase of banking, had made him well qualified for the highest executive position in the institution and in this connection he is making a most creditable record. His progressiveness is tempered by a safe conservatism and he is most careful in watching over the interests of the institution, that not only the stockholders but also the depositors may be fully protected. Today he is widely known in banking circles throughout this part of the state, for he has made investments in various institutions, being now the vice president of the State Bank of Swea City, a director of the Whittemore State Bank, the Fenton State Bank, the First National Bank of Burt, Iowa, and the Farmers Savings Bank of Fenton, Iowa.
On the 9th of June, 1897, in Algona, Iowa, Mr. Chubb was married to Miss Laura Tennant, a daughter of Joel W. and Ella A. Tennant, who for fifteen years were owners and managers of the Hotel Tennant, Algona’s most popular hostelry, being associated therewith from 1883 until 1908. Mr. and Mrs. Chubb have a daughter, Ernestine, born April 20, 1904.
In politics Mr. Chubb is a republican and from 1904 until 1908 served as alderman of the city, in which connection he exercised his official prerogatives in support of many measures for the public good. He is identified with various fraternal organizations, belonging to Algona Lodge, I. O. O. F., which he joined in 1892; Algona Lodge, No. 174, K. P.; the Sons of Veterans; and the Modern Woodmen of America. In Masonry he has attained high rank, holding membership in Prudence Lodge, A. F. & A. M., and Prudence Chapter, R. A. M., both of Algona, Esdraelon Commandery, No. 52, K. T., of Estherville; Des Moines Consistory, No. 3, A. A. S. R.; and Za-Ga-Zig Temple of the Mystic Shrine, also at Des Moines. He has a wide acquaintance in fraternal organizations and is esteemed most highly by his brethren of these societies. In other relations, too, he commands warm regard and perhaps no life history in all this volume indicates more clearly the possibilities for the attainment of success when industry determination and ambition lead the way.
