Biography reproduced from page 394 of Volume II of the History of Kossuth County written by Benjamin F. Reed and published in 1913:
Dr. C. H. Cretzmeyer, who has been a practicing physician in Algona for ten years, was born in Waverly, Bremer county, Iowa, August 16, 1978, a son of Henry and Margaret (Mooney) Cretzmeyer, the former of German descent and the latter of Irish lineage. The paternal grandfather was born in Baden, Germany, and the father’s birth occurred in New York state. He removed with his family to Iowa about 1858 and located in Waverly, where he still resides. He was one of three sons, another, Stephen, served throughout the Civil war, having enlisted in Muscatine, and was confined in Andersonville prison. Mrs. Cretzmeyer’s birth occurred in Baltimore, Maryland, but she was married in Iowa, where she is still residing. She is the mother of the following children, of whom the subject of this sketch is the eldest: Mary, superintendent of schools of Bremer county; Frank, a physician at Emmetsburg; Rose, who makes her home with her brother C. H.; John, who is one of the instructors in St. Joseph’s College at Dubuque; Agnes, deceased; Annette, at home; Margaret; and Joseph.
C. H. Cretzmeyer began his education in the Waverly public schools and after he had completed the course offered in the high school he engaged in teaching for two years before entering the State University of Iowa, at Iowa City, from which institution he was graduated in 1901. Early in life he had determined upon the practice of medicine as his life work and therefore took up a medical course. After his graduation he became a resident physician in the University Hospital, where he served his interneship of one year, at the expiration of which period he came to Algona and since 1902 has been a resident of this city. He is conscientious in his work and has built up a gratifying practice. Keeping in touch with the latest methods and discoveries made in the medical world he is thoroughly conversant with the recent advances made in the science of medicine. He shows decided ability for the profession he has chosen as his life work and finds recognition thereof in his increasing practice.
In 1905 Dr. Cretzmeyer was married to Miss Maude G. Lowe, whose birth occurred at Osceola, Iowa, and who died on the 8th of December, 1909. She is buried at Osceola. In politics Dr. Cretzmeyer maintains an independent attitude, his vote being cast for man or measure according to individual merit. He is a member of the Roman Catholic church, of the Knights of Columbus, of which he is treasurer, of the state and national medical associations, and of the Kossuth County Medical Society, of which he is president.
