Biography reproduced from page 388 of Volume II of the History of Kossuth County written by Benjamin F. Reed and published in 1913:
Among the highly respected and well known farmers of Kossuth county is John L. Daub, who is owner of a fine farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Cresco township, four miles south of Algona. He is also managing another farm, belonging to his father-in-law, and has marked ability as an agriculturist and business man. He was born in Pennsylvania, February 27, 1861, a son of Henry and Caroline (Still) Daub, both natives of Pennsylvania and of German descent. The paternal grandfather left the fatherland and emigrated to this country at a very early date and with him the father made his home in Pennsylvania until he attained his majority. He then began farming on his own account, purchasing a small piece of land in Pennsylvania, and upon that farm he lived during the remainder of his life, his death occurring in May, 1899, while the mother passed away in June, 1890.
John L. Daub was reared and educated in Pennsylvania, being indebted for his learning to the district schools of the neighborhood in which the family lived. He remained with his parents until he was seventeen years of age, when he removed to Ohio and in that state was employed for three years in farm work. At the end of that period he returned to his native state but remained there only a short time. His next field of active labor was in Illinois, where he was employed as a farm hand for four years, after which he came to Kossuth county, Iowa, and engaged in agricultural pursuits on his own account, taking charge of his father-in-law’s farm, which he personally operated for eighteen years with much success. Four years after assuming charge of that place he purchased a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Cresco township, four miles south of Algona, which he leased to others until 1906, when he again occupied the place and has since made his home there. He worked early and late on his farm, placing on it good improvements and bringing it to a high state of cultivation. He still supervises the farm of this father-in-law, although he is leasing it to tenants. He is also financially interested in other enterprises in the community. He now lives practically retired, renting all his land excepting forty acres which he continues to operate.
Mr. Daub was married on November 30, 1887, to Miss Henrietta Hartman, who was born in Granville, Illinois, January 30, 1865, a daughter of William and Catherine (Miller) Hartman, both natives of Germany. The father emigrated to this country many years ago, settling near Granville, Illinois, where he is still living at the age of seventy-seven years, but the mother passed away on July 3, 1867.
Politically Mr. Daub is a republican and although he has never been an office seeker, he has served as road supervisor of his township. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and takes an active interest in the affairs of that organization. Both he and his wife affiliate with the Congregational church of Algona, bring among its active supporters. Mr. Daub has long been recognized as one of the leading and most successful farmers of the community as well as a most estimable citizen. He takes an active interest in public matters and always casts his influence on the side of those enterprises which have as their object the betterment of conditions in his community.
