Biography reproduced from page 518 of Volume II of the History of Kossuth County written by Benjamin F. Reed and published in 1913:

C. W. Hendryx, proprietor of the Algona Bakery, has lived in this city since 1908. He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, September 25, 1879, a son of Thomas and Alice (Hackley) Hendryx. Both of his parents were born in Ohio and came west while quite young. The father is still living in the west but the mother passed away in 1907. Thomas Hendryx was a carpenter and the father of seven children, namely: Emma, the wife of Max Fields, of Westplains, Missouri; Samuel, who is a resident of Oskaloosa, Iowa; David, living in Albia, Iowa; John, who makes his home in Oskaloosa, this state; Charles, of Wellman, Iowa; C. W., of this review; and Hester, deceased.

C. W. Hendryx was educated in the common schools of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and remained at home until the age of eighteen years, when he began to learn the baker’s trade at Missouri Valley, Iowa. There he remained for three months and then went to Adel, Iowa, and worked in a restaurant for about one year. He next made his way to Tama, Iowa, and there resided for almost a similar period, when he returned to Adel and again started working in a bakery. After four months he went to Coon Rapids, Iowa, where he was employed for nine months and from there went to Cambridge, Iowa, where he again worked in a bakery for the period of one year. He then went to the Pacific coast, locating in Santa Barbara, California, and purchased the Quaker Bakery. He was there eighteen months, when he sold out and for a third time made his way to Adel, Iowa, where he worked for T. C. Reynolds one year. He came from there to Algona, where he is now successfully conducting the local bakery, which he greatly improved by putting in seven hundred dollars’ worth of new machinery, thereby enlarging its capacity so that he now handles a large and increasing business. He is the owner of a residence on North Minnesota street, together with two city lots, but makes his home in the bakery for business convenience and rents the house.

In 1902 Mr. Hendryx wedded Miss Margaret Fisher, who was born in Boone county, Iowa, a daughter of Joseph and Rachel (Carr) Fisher, both natives of England. Mrs. Hendryx is one of three daughters, her sisters being: Alwilda, the wife of Robert Millard, of Willis, Michigan; and Didema, the wife of Bert Siders, of Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Mr. Hendryx is republican in his political views, having supported the men and measures of that party since age conferred upon him the right of franchise. He is likewise one of the loyal members and liberal supporters of the Methodist Episcopal church. He is among the highly respected citizens of Algona, is a man of enterprising public spirit, and is always found working in the interests of the city. He enjoys a large and increasing patronage and the circle of his friends and acquaintances is continually growing.
