V. J. Sands is one of the owners and publishers of the News-World of Wesley, of which city he has been a resident since 1911. He was born in Wright county, Iowa, March 22, 1887, and is a son of Edwin H. and Ella (Perrington) Sands. The paternal grandfather was Rev. J. D. Sands, and the father, Edwin H. Sands, is a native of Iowa and by trade and occupation a barber. He maintains his residence at Belmond, this state. In his family were twelve children, as follows: Edwin H., a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church at Forest City, Iowa, who was a volunteer in the Fourth United States cavalry during the Spanish-American war; Emma, the wife of C. V. Glascock, of St. Joseph, Missouri; Pearl, who married J. C. Mull, of Belmond, Iowa; V. J., of this review; Leo, a resident of St. Paul, Minnesota; Stella, Nellie and Irle, all at home; Lyle attending school; and three, who died in infancy.
V. J. Sands was reared in his parents’ home and received his early education in Belmond. At the age of nine years he became an apprenticed printer in one of the printing offices in Belmond and in addition to his having learned that trade he also learned the barber’s trade, working nights and Saturdays at his father’s shop. On April 1, 1907, he went to Canon City, Colorado, and there remained for one year, after which he spent some time in travel and later took up his abode in Algona, Iowa, at which place he remained for two years, and then took up work at New London, where he continued for a period of one year, after which he settled in Wesley. In the month of November, 1911, he purchased the News-World and associated with Dewell & Clark, of the Algona Advance. The paper is an eight-page sheet and is one of the popular and well known publications in this part of Iowa. In addition to the publication of the paper the company also maintains and operates very successfully a job printing office.
Mr. Sands is affiliated with the republican party, is a member of the Brotherhood of American Yeomen of Belmond and also of the Wesley bank. He also carries an insurance policy in the Bankers Life of Des Moines. His religious affiliations are with the Methodist Episcopal church of Wesley. He is one of the enterprising young business men of Kossuth county and is highly esteemed for his integrity in all business transactions and the high standard of his moral and religious life.
