Biography reproduced from page 123 of Volume II of the History of Kossuth County written by Benjamin F. Reed and published in 1913:

Robert S. Sherwood, postmaster of Burt and well known because of his active connection with newspaper publication as well as by reason of his political activity, was born in New Washington, Ohio, September 28, 1875, his parents being Joseph and Mary Elinor Sherwood. The father, a native of Bordeaux, France, came to America to join the northern army during the Civil war. The mother was a native of Quebec, Canada.

The removal of the family from Ohio to Iowa made it possible for Robert S. Sherwood to complete his education as a student in the high school of Parkersburg. Almost immediately thereafter he became connected with newspaper interests and has since become well known in the field of journalism. He has made an excellent record as a public official, serving as justice of the peace for three years, as city clerk for three years and as postmaster. In the discharge of his duties he is prompt, systematic and reliable and the excellent record which he has made has commended him to the confidence, good-will and respect of all.

On the 21st of May, 1902, at Burt, Mr. Sherwood was married to Miss Grace R. Davison, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Davison, pioneer settlers of Kossuth county. The children of this marriage are Hollynd S. and Helen Virginia, aged respectively eight and two years. Mr. Sherwood is a recognized leader in the progressive movement in Kossuth county. He has been a delegate at different times to the county and state conventions of the republican party and he is ever a close student of the vital questions and issues of the day. He forms his opinions as the result of careful consideration of the questions at issue and he holds strongly to the advanced stand as represented in the progressive movement. He is well known in fraternal circles, having held various offices in the Woodmen camp at Parkersburg, while his membership is now with the camp at Burt. He is also identified with the Odd Fellows, the Yeomen and the Homesteaders and for the last named is acting as clerk.
