Ada L. Leisure

Ada L. Leisure, 89, of Packwood died early Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at Maplewood Manor Nursing Home in Keota, where she had been a resident since June.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Packwood Christian Church with the Rev. Harlan Van Voorst officiating. Burial will be in the Packwood Cemetery.

Open visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. at Packwood Christian Church. Memorials have been established to either the Packwood First Responders or the Packwood Christian Church.

Mrs. Leisure was born Feb. 19, 1911, in Keokuk County's Jackson Township, north of Ollie, the daughter of James Arthur and Annie Violet Dixon Power. She married Ira G. Leisure in August 1931. he died in 1985.

Mrs. Leisure grew up on the home place and graduated from Ollie High School in 1928. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Parsons College in Fairfield and masters of arts degree from Northeast Missouri State College in 1970. Mrs. Leisure also graduated from telegrapher's school in Chillicothe, Mo., and worked as a telegrapher in the Chicago area for about two years. She and her husband farmed in the Packwood area for many years before moving to Fairfield in the mid-1950s. She first taught country school and later elementary school in Ollie and Libertyville until her retirement in 1973.

She returned to Packwood following her husband's death and held a position on the board of directors of the Farmers Savings Bank in Packwood until 1996.

Mrs. Leisure was a member of the Packwood Christian Church, Delta Zeta Soroity(sp), Order of the Eastern Star at Abingdon, the Retired Teachers Association and the Linby Club.

Survivors include one sister, Madeline Williams of Ollie.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Sarah Ella Adrian.
