Ned E. Pence, 77, of What Cheer died Tuesday, October 20, 1992, at Mahaska Manor in Oskaloosa.

He was born February 24, 1915 in Sigourney to Artie Franklin and Anna Mae Loftus Pence. He married Verna Johannes Ferns on August 10, 1965 in Oskaloosa.

He worked at John Morrell & Co. before serving in World War II. He was a Signal Maintenance man for Rock Island Railroad from the 1940s until the late 1970s. He was a member of Oskaloosa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2237, American Legion Clubb Shipley Post 485 of Delta, National Association of Retired Veteran Railroad Employees, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sigourney and was a life-time resident of the Delta area.

He is survived by his wife Verna; three step-sons, Gary Ferns, Ronald Ferns and Loren Ferns;
three step-daughters, Shirley Allison and Joanne Asher and Gladys Barainca; 17 step-grandchildren; 23 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Beall; two nephews, Daryl Beall and Stanley Beall; and one niece, Carole Schoneman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step-grandchild, Gary Ferns; a sister, Naomi Anderson and two nephews, Jerry Dale and Michael Paul Beall.

The service was 11:00 a.m. Friday at Fremont Funeral Chapel, the Father Braida and Deacon James Striegel officiating. Burial was in Garrett Cemetery at Delta.
