Ruby Ione Pope

Ruby Ione Pope was born February 20, 1922, in North English, the daughter of James Carl and Iva Irene Markwell Herdliska.

She taught seven years in country schools near Marengo and North English before working at Kaiser Ag Chemical in Keswick as a bookkeeper. Ruby also did sewing and alterations for people.

She was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the Church Circle. She also was a member of the True Blue Club.

Ruby was married to Alfred Pope November 27, 1946, at the Pleasant Grove Brethren Church near Millersburg. They made their home and farmed in the rural Webster community.

She retired in 1998 and moved to her parent's home in North English. She volunteered for over 20 years with the reading program at the English Valleys Elementary School and received several awards for her many years of volunteer work.

Ruby enjoyed attending sporting activities with her family. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa State basketball fan. Ruby moved to SunnyBrook Living Care Center in Fairfield on April 8, 2014. She died there on Monday, May 5, 2014, at the age of 92 years.

Ruby is survived by her son Don (Reta) Pope of Fairfield; two granddaughters: Angie (Brandon) Coleman of Fairfield; Katie (Dave Belluchi) Pope of Lees Summit, Missouri; three great-grandchildren: Bailee, Emma and Jaxon Coleman; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Don Herdliska and sister-in-law Jennie; and a sister Joan Axmear Griffin.

A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the funeral home. As per Ruby's wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes will be buried at a later date.
