Irene M. Barron, the daughter of John H. and Carrie Raber Smith, was born on Sunday, October 29, 1911, in Wapello County. She graduated from the Packwood High School with the class of 1929. On December 25, 1930, she was united in marriage to Earl E. Barron at Ottumwa, and he died May 7, 1967. From 1968 until 1992, she worked at McCurdy Seed in Fremont in the research department. Irene was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women; a 50 plus year member of the Lucky Star Club; and a member of the Sixty Plus Club in Fremont. She enjoyed sewing and cooking; tending her flowers; and an avid Iowa Hawkeyes sports fan. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

On Monday, May 31, 2004, Irene died at Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa, at the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 2 days.

She is survived by her daughter: Carolyn Malloy; a son and his wife, Ronald and Sandra Barron; a daughter in law, Deborah Barron; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Kelley.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Stephen E. Barron; a son- in-law, Donald E. Malloy; 4 brothers, Walter, George, John, and Glenn Smith; and 2 sisters,
Florence Wilburn and Dorothy Smith.

Services were held June 3 at Bates Funeral Chapel. Burial at McCormick cemetery, Highland Center, Iowa.

Note: Earl & Irene lived east of Hayesville for many years.
