Longtime city employee Walter Weaklend dies

Former Fairfield public works superintendent and water filtering plant operator Walter L. Weaklend died Friday afternoon at his home at 109 E. Kirkwood Ave. He was 92.

Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr. Terry Sutton pronounce Weaklend dead at the scene. Sutton said Weaklend died of natural causes related to heart failure.

Weaklend was born Jan. 28, 1895, in Clark County, the son of Stephen and Martha Haltam Weaklend. He grew up in the Woodburn community and had lived in Fairfield for 58 years.

Weaklend retire in April 1963 as Fairfield water filtering plant operator after 42 years in the water department field. He started as a city employee in 1921, working with the street department. The following year he joined the water and light department and at other times also served as public works superintendent.

In 1943, Weaklend moved to Clarinda where he was water department superintendent for 12 years. He returned to Fairfield in 1955 and served as operator of the water filtering plant for eight years until his retirement.

Weaklend married Velma Norene Davis Dec. 24, 1916, at the home of her parents south of Fairfield. He was a member of the First Christian Church and a member of the Senior Citizen Chorus. He was First Christian Church Sunday school superintendent for 28 years.

In addition to his wife, Weaklend is survived by one daughter, Doris Johnson of Fairfield; three grandchildren, Larry Johnson of Wichita, Kan., Nancy Carcia of Mound City, Mo. and Sally Chandler of Fairfield; six great-grandchildren, Lani and Heidi Johnson, Lisa and Jimmy Carcia, Chuck Yeoman and Jessica Chandler; and a brother Richard Weaklend of Creston. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

The service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Gates officiating. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery near Ollie.

Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience beginning at noon Sunday. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.
