Old veteran passes away, John S Robertson, a veteran of the Civil War dies suddenly at home in Haysville Iowa

Word was received here Monday for noon that John Sloan Robertson had died Monday in Haysville where he resided. Mr. Robertson was 78 years of age, a veteran of the Civil War and has been in declining health all winter and spring. He was in Sigourney only last week and was a visitor at this office at this time. He said then he was poorly and we noticed that he had failed much since we had seen them. Death came suddenly and while he was in the yard. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon.

John Sloan Robertson was born July 6, 1834 in Chester county, Pennsylvania. He departed this life May 19, 1913, at his home in Hayesville Iowa at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 13 days.

John Robertson came with his parents to Cedar County, Iowa when only a young man and resided there until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he answered the call of his country and enlisted as a private, in which capacity he served until his enlistment expired in July, 1863, at which time he was honorably discharged but immediately reenlisted in the company K 8th regiment of Iowa Cavalry and was raised to the rank of sergeant, from which he was honorably discharged at Macon Georgia in July,1865,by reason of his promotion to the rank of first lieutenant company K 8th Iowa Cavalry and served his country faithfully in that capacity until he received his honorable discharge as quartermaster sergeant and first lieutenant of his company.

At the close of the war he returned to the home of his parents in Keswick, Keokuk County, Iowa where he was united in marriage to Eliza Ann Davis, January 3, 1867. To this union were born six children, Jefferson, Addie Maria, Eugene M, Maggie Blanche, Lieuetta May and Winfield S.

He is survived by wife, three children, Eugene, Lieuetta, Winfield, besides a grandchildren and a host of friends.
