Mattie Davis suffered a terrible accident which occured at 8:00 a.m. Dr Johnson was summoned, but all to no avail and the victim of the terrible clamity lay cold in death five hours later. Mrs.Will Clary said Mother was washing dishes. Sister was standing facing mother with her back to the stove. She walked into the room adjoining and stood in front of the bureau. Father who was sick in bed smelled something burning and noticed smoke from the bottom of Matties dress. In an instance, she was enveloped in flames and cried aloud for help. Mattie did not seem to suffer until s few minutes before she died."
