Virgil Lee Behrens, 68, of Knoxville died June 03, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.

Funeral services will be held Saturday June 7, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Sigourney, IA at 10:30 a.m.

Visitation will be held 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Holm Funeral Home in Sigourney.

Burial will be held at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Virgil was born September 4, 1939 in Lowden, IA to Walter and Viola Sieck Behrens. He graduated from West Branch High School in 1959. He served in the United States Army. Virgil joined the Iowa State Patrol in 1965, and was assigned to Keokuk County in Post 13.

Virgil married Janet Greenhalgh on June 11, 1966 in Sigourney, IA. A son and a daughter were born to this union, Kurt Behrens and Kristin Holdeman.

Virgil served with the Iowa State Patrol for 30 years, retiring in 1995. Following his retirement from the Patrol, Virgil and his wife then moved to Knoxville, IA where he served with the Marion County Sheriff’s department for 13 years, first as a reserve officer then as a transport officer/ jailer.

Virgil had many interests including: farming for 14 years, serving on the Keokuk County Expo board for many years, promoting ATV races, playing and umpiring softball games. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also announced various tractor pulls. Virgil always had a soft spot in his heart for kids. He was especially fond and proud of his grandchildren.

Virgil is survived by his wife Janet of Knoxville; son Kurt (Nicole) Behrens of Bixby, OK; daughter Kristin(Mike) Holdeman of Reasnor, IA; grandchildren: Tiffany Goldman, Zachary Behrens, Steven Roose, Jesiah Behrens, Katelyn Behrens, Shelby Holdeman and Codi Holdeman; a brother Gilbert(Phyllis) Behrens of Tipton, IA, and a sister Lavonne(Massey) Cook of Tavares, FL,.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
