Richland Woman Fatally Hurt In 2-Vehicle Crash

Mrs. Myrtle Weber, 70, Richland, suffered fatal injuries Thursday evening in a two-vehicle crash as a country intersection about a half-mile east of Walton Lake. The accident took place about 6:30 p.m.

Mrs. Weber died at about 11:30 p.m. at University Hospital in Iowa City where she was rushed by ambulance following the collision.

She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Edward Felix Weber, 70, who was also taken to the hospital in Iowa City where he was listed in serious condition this morning.

Eugene Leroy Davisson, 41, Route 1, driver of a pickup truck involved in the crash, is a patient in the Jefferson County hospital. A report from the hospital this morning said his condition was satisfactory.

The accident took place just after storm warnings had been issued for the Fairfield area but the warnings were not considered a factor in causing the accident.

Officers who investigated the fatal crash said the car driven by Weber was traveling north on a county graveled road, failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into the side of the pickup truck going east.

Both vehicles came to a halt in a ditch in the northeast corner of the intersection. Weber was thrown from his car and was found on the ground between the car and the truck.

Davisson was pulled from the wreckage of his pickup truck by police officers who were the first to arrive at the scene. The pickup truck had rolled over on its side and gasoline was leaking from the vehicle.

Officers said it appeared Davisson suffered head injuries, cuts and bruises.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the accident victims to the Jefferson County Hospital. Two ambulances were also used to transport Mr. and Mrs. Weber to Iowa City.

Officers quickly converged on the accident scene since most all law enforcement agencies had been dispatched to rural areas to spot possible tornadoe(sp) reported in the area just a few minutes previously.

Those helping at the scene included state troopers, sheriff's deputies, city police and police posse.

Officers said both vehicles involved in the crash were demolished.

Services for Mrs. Weber are tentatively planned Monday at 9:30 am. at Mother Cabrini Catholic Church in Richland. Father Glenn W. Fuegen will officiate and burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery.

The family rosary will be held Saturday evening and the parish rosary will be held Sunday evening at the Gould Funeral Home.

Mrs. Weber was born June ??, 1906 near Sigourney, the daughter of William and Maude Snakenberg. She was married Feb. 25, 1930 to Edward ?. Weber. The couple resided five and a half miles northwest of Richland.

Surviving are her husband, two sons, Francis Weber, Fairfield; and James Weber, Iowa City; eight grandchildren and two brothers, Dale Snakenberg and Elmer Snakenberg, both of Sigourney. One daughter preceded her in death.
