R. A. (Roy) Russell, 85, died at the Senior Home in Monticello Sunday, Oct. 24, 1971 after a lingering illness.
Royal A. Russell was born Oct. 27, 1885 at Hebron, Neb., the son of Frank and Estella Mitchell Russell. He moved with his parents to Fredericksburg as a small child. He attended school there and later attended Lenox college in Hopkinton. On Dec. 30, 1904 he was married to Blanche Byerly. They made their home in Oelwein before moving to a farm in Jackson township, where they lived until moving to Anamosa in 1931. He entered the insurance business and was active in partnership with his son, Glen, until his retirement in 1967.
He was a member of the American Rose society, Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodge, former member of the Anamosa Rotary club and charter member of the Farm Bureau.
He is survived by four children, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Jones, Houston, Tex.; Glen Russell, Anamosa; Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Mizaur, Oxford Junction; John Russell, Clinton. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche, March 5, 1971; two children and his parents.
Funeral services were held at Goettsch Funeral home Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Brown Garlock officiating. Interment was in Antioch cemetery near Anamosa.
Casket bearers were Jack Fahey, Wilson Kouba, Donald Crow, Sherman Hanna, Duane Herren and Lawrence LaBarge.
