June 10, 1971 - The Anamosa Eureka

Mrs. Charles Arthur, 84, long time resident of Jones county, died at the Anamosa Community hospital early Monday, June 7, 1971, after a brief illness.

Born Sophia Elizabeth Anderson, May 11, 1887, in Sweden, she was the daughter of L. A. and Anna Peterson Anderson. She came to this area as a small child with her parents, attended the rural school near Stone City and in November, 1904, was married to Charles Arthur at her family home.

They made their home in the Anamosa community. Mr. Arthur died in February, 1940.

She is survived by ten children, Harlan and Clifford, Detroit, Mich.; Charles, Hattiesburg, Miss.; Max, Marion; Gene, Ashville, N.C.; Mrs. William (Mildred) Wessels, Anamosa; Mrs. Don (Ann) Bauman, Milwaukee, Wisc.; Mrs. Herman (Pauline) Brunscheen, Wyoming; Mrs. Waylon (Gloria) McCord, Coralville and Mrs. Ray (Bertha) Finn, Anamosa.

Also surviving are 30 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Lena Schooley, Racine, Wisc.

She was preceded in death by two children in addition to her husband and her parents; two sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Arthur was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and the Royal Neighbors.

Funeral services were held at the Goettsch funeral home Wednesday, June 9, 1971 with Rev. Canon D. A. Loferski officiating. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.

Pallbearers were Michael Finn, Kelly Finn, David Arthur, Robert Arthur, Glenn McCord and Waylon McCord, jr.
