George Jansen Siebels, 76, a lifetime resident of Jones county and the Amber community passed away at veterans hospital, Iowa City Sunday, April 11, 1971 after an illness of several weeks.

George Jansen Siebels was born March 15, 1895 in Wayne township, the son of Garret and Anna Rieken Siebels. He attended the Wayne township school and in 1918 entered the army. He received the purple heart and was discharged in 1919.

February 22, 1922 he was united in marriage to Laura Toenjes and they made their home in Amber where they operated a grocery store and he served as postmaster until their retirement in 1965. Mrs. Siebels preceded him in death September 12, 1967.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran church, American Legion, in which he was a past commander, the 40 and 8, Anamosa Masonic lodge, Ed Kahir Shrine. He was a director of the Jones county fire department association, and a member of the Jones county Postmasters.

He is survived by three children, Mrs. Lowell (Wanda) Ahrendsen, Rochester, N.Y., Mrs. Arthur (Shirley) Handel, Houston, Texas and John, Amber; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A sister, Mrs. Ben Wroblewski, Central City also survives. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were held in Zion Lutheran church Wednesday, April 14 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harvey Gilbertson officiating. Interment was in Wayne Zion cemetery. Military services were conducted by the Arthur McCullough Post No. 13, American Legion.

Pallbearers were Carl Folkers, Duane Herren, Irvin Toenjes, Rex Heiken, Allen Siebels and Harvey Siebels.
