John Tallman, 71, a lifelong resident of Rome township, died Sunday, March 28, 19761 at the Monticello senior home after a lingering illness.

John Tallman was born April 24, 1899, the son of Wilbur and Delilah Merritt Tallman. He attended Rome township schools and was married to Nellie L. Van Slyke January 7, 1920. They had one daughter, Lois. Nellie Tallman preceded him in death, March 30, 1948. He was married to Clara Holdren September 22, 1950, and they had two children, Wilbur and Lisa.

Mr. Tallman is survived by his wife, Clara; two daughters, Mrs. Verne (Lois) Shaffer; Lisa Tallman and his son, Wilbur.

Other survivors include three step-daughters, Mrs. Charlene Martin, Olin; Mrs. Shirley Grassfield, Anamosa; Mrs. Frances Appleby, Olin; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Mrs. Avert Cook and Mary Tallman, both of Anamosa; and Mrs. Uriah Pieper, Mechanicsville, also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and his wife, Nellie.

Funeral services for John Tallman were held at the Goettsch funeral home Thursday, April 1, with the Rev. Melvin Miller officiating. Interment was at Green Center cemetery. Pallbearers were Kenneth Pieper, Ivan Duncan, Marvin Tallman, Glenn Siver, Lester Tallman and Robert Eiben.
