January 14, 1971 - The Anamosa Eureka

Mrs. Margaret Dirks, 89, widow of Will Dirks, died at the John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, Tuesday evening, Jan. 5, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 8, 1971 at 1:30 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran church. Interment was in Wayne Zion Cemetery. Rev. Harvey O. Gilbertson officiated.

Margaret Sophia Dirks was born at Hanover, Germany, Jan. 3, 1882, the daughter of Dietrich and Margaret Bodker Dirks. She was baptized in Germany and when two months old came with her parents to the United States and they settled in the Monticello area. She later received her early education in the schools of Jones county.

Margaret S. Dirks was married to Will Dirks, May 22, 1902, and the couple farmed in the Monticello area until retiring and moving to Amber, Iowa in 1937 where they lived nine years before making their home in Monticello, Iowa. Her husband died November 25, 1959. Mrs. Dirks was confirmed in the Wayne Lutheran Church and has been a life member there.

She is survived by seven children, Mrs. Grace Hanly, Peoria, Ill.; George D. Dirks, Amber; Louis R. Dirks, Naperville, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Hinrichs, Amber; Mrs. Otis (Edna) Thomas, Clinton; Clarence Dirks, Clinton; and Ruth, Mrs. Louis Gerdes, Dixon, Ill.

Also 28 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. William (Matie) Oltmanns, Anamosa; and two brothers, Gerd Dirks, Wyoming; and Henry Dirks, Anamosa. She was preceded in death by two sons, two daughters, a grandson, two brothers and four sisters.
