20 July 1953 - The Anamosa Journal

Francis J. Richards, 95, one of Anamosa's oldest residents, died at the Collier nursing home, Anamosa, Friday, July 17.

Funeral service was held at the Goettsch funeral home, Anamosa, at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 19. Rev. Harry D. Green, Marion, a friend of the family and a former pastor of the Anamosa Methodist church, conducted the service.

Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Casket bearers were Clifford Comfort, Hubert M. Stoddard, Richard Shaffer, Darrell Meredith, Harold Ballou and William Reese, Olin.

Mr. Richards was born at Dodgeville, Wisc., May 10, 1858, and moved with his family to Prairieburg when he was a child. It was in this neighborhood that he grew up, attending the rural school of that community.

On March 22, 1881, he was married to Nancy Elizabeth Minehart, and they began their new home in a log cabin in Buffalo township, Linn county. The log cabin was their home for sometime, finally coming to settle in Jones county. They resided in Anamosa for many years. Five children were born to the couple.

Mrs. Richards died March 22, 19?? One child, who died in infancy, also preceded him in death.

Surviving children are George Irving Richards; Windsor, Colo.; Mrs. Frank (Bessie Cleora) Stoddard, Anamosa; Frances Aletha Hargraves, Lost Nation; Jay D. Richards, Independence. There are also seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
