August 13, 1953 - The Anamosa Eureka

Mrs. Amalie Martens, 79, Anamosa, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Mercy hospital following a long illness.

Funeral service will be held at Goettsch funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. John W. Hosmer conducting the service. Burial will be in the Forest Chapel cemetery.

Casket bearers will be William Bailey, Will Klinefelter, Fred Pulver, Roy Duncan, Charles Gray and Raleigh Shoop.

Mrs. Martens was born Nov. 25, 1873, in Jever, Germany. In 1889 she and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Bloh, came to the United States and settled in Mason City, Ill.

In February, 1898, she was married to John Martens, who was a farmer. Four children were born to this union. Two died in infancy.

The family moved to Iowa in March of 1918 and settled on a farm in the Forest Chapel neighborhood. Mr. Martens died on June 15, 1943, and in 1947 Mrs. Martens moved to Anamosa, where she lived until her death.

She attended the First Congregational church in Anamosa.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dwight Pulver and Mrs. Donald Brokaw, both of Anamosa; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
