30 March 1953 - The Anamosa Journal

Coroner Howard Campbell, Olin, termed the death of George Schoop, 72, Olin, as suicide. No inquest will be held.

Body of Mr. Schoop was found late Sunday by the coroner after he was called to the farm by Schoop's son-in-law, Harlan Schumaker. Schumaker had visited the farm and found a suicide note on the kitchen table. He called the coroner to help him search for the body.

Body was discovered in the barn. The body was hanging by a rope to one of the rafters of the barn and there was a bullet-hole in the right temple, indicating he had placed the noose around his neck and then shot himself. A rifle was found near the body.

From the note, investigating officers decided that Schoop must have died Thursday. The note was dated Thursday and explained that he "didn't want to be a burden" and noted that he was "getting old."

He had visited his daughter, Mrs. Schumaker, twice on Thursday.

Mr. Schoop had lived alone at the farm since the death of his wife about four years ago.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of a son who lives in Fort Madison.
