Martha Elizabeth Herrick, the daughter of Jason D. and Almina Burroughs Herrick, was born at Columbus, Ohio, December 17, 1854, and passed away at the home of her niece, Marjorie E. White in Olin, Iowa, January 26, 1952.
She came to Iowa with her parents who settled in Olin.
After the death of her father in the Civil War the family moved to Monticello, Iowa, where she attended school and was graduated from the high school.
Having attended the Iowa State College at Ames for one year, she returned to Monticello and taught for many years in the schools there.
Later after completing a course in Kindergarten training, she taught in a private Kindergarten school in Cedar Raids for some time.
All her later teaching, with the exception of one year in Norfolk, Nebr., was done in the public school of eastern Iowa.
She was always much interested in the welfare of her former pupils and retained that interest to the last.
Miss Herrick was a member of the Congregational church.
Miss Herrick is survived by three nieces, Marjorie E. and Mary Virginia White and Mrs. Daisy Truax, one nephew, Dr. Seward White, all of Olin; two great nieces, Mrs. Rosemary Davis, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Miss Marie Cluny, Davenport, Ia.; three great nephews, Dr. Frederick Truax, Monona, Ia.; John Cluny, Davenport, Ia.; and Theodore Soetje, Chicago, Ill.
Funeral services were conducted at the Campbell Funeral Home in Olin on Monday, January 28, 1952, with Rev. M. L. Dutro in charge. Mrs. Leon Stivers sang, "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me", accompanied by Mrs. Louis Rohwedder at the piano.
Interment was in the Olin cemetery. Casket bearers were Gerald Kruse, Joe Pieper, Ernest Peck, Roy Moreland, Delbert Stingley and Joe Clay.
