MONTICELLO - Funeral services for Joseph Thomas Winans, formerly of Monticello, were held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Goettsch Funeral home in Monticello with the Rev. Fr. John Ptacek officiating. Burial was in Cascade cemetery.

Mr. Winans died Aug. 10 at Iowa City after a long illness. He was born at Iron Hills, the son of William and Margaret Ketchum Winans. He married Margaret Cairy on May 27, 1913, at Fillmore and later the family moved to Monticello, where they lived for a number of years. They were the parents of five children, Margaret Winans died in June of 1942.

Mr. Winans married Lucille Cornwell and the couple lived in Monticello until six years ago when they moved to Iowa City.

He is survived by his wife Lucille; three sons, Thomas of South San Francisco, Calif., James of Chicago, Ill., and David of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Louis (Josephine) Rigby of Hopkinton and Mrs. Chris (Catherine) Hennig of Eureka Springs, Ark.; and a step-son, Maurice Toomer of Lone Tree.

He is also survived by a brother Charles Winans, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Kreeb, both of Monticello; 23 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Edward Rigby, Charles Rigby, James Rigby, Arthur Rigby, Robert Fleming and Maurice Toomer, Jr.
