September 12, 1963 - Monticello Express

A Jones county woman, Mrs. Flora Hurt, 72, was killed instantly Friday morning by a speeding train at a crossing in Martelle. She was walking across the Milwaukee railroad track near the depot when the accident occurred.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hurt were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Martelle. The Rev. J. Ellis Webb officiated.

Mrs. Hurt had lived in the Anamosa and Martelle communities since 1913. Her husband, Onia Hurt, preceded her in death in 1945.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Shifflett, Shelbyville, Ind.; seven grandparents including Onia Shifflett, Martelle, and a brother and a sister.

Mrs. Hurt was returning home about 8:27 a.m. from the Farmers Co-op Elevator where she had purchased a box of corn to feed squirrels in her yard. She apparently did not hear or see the train. The impact hurled the body about 75 feet away. The train came to a stop about 300 yards down the track.
