Funeral service for Mrs. Clara E. Hale, 90, widow of former Senator John K. Hale, was held Tuesday in the Smykil Home for Funerals.

She had been ill the last 20 months.

Rev. B. C. Crockett, pastor of the First Congregational church, conducted the service. Casket bearers were Karl Mershon, James T. Remley, Charles Niles, John Hayes, George Zeuch and Jack Miller. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.

Mrs. Hale, Clara E. Stone was born July 19, 1857, at Bowen's Prairie, the earliest settlement in Jones county. She was the daughter of Curtis Stone and Mary Ann Burton Stone, pioneer family who came here from New Hampshire and Vermont in 1852.

Clara Stone attended rural schools, the Monticello high school and the Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls. After teaching several terms in the rural schools of Jones county, she and Mr. Hale were married July15, 1882.

They lived together for 64 years both on a farm in Cass township and in Anamosa. Mr. Hale died in 1946.

Survivors are a step-daughter, Myrta, at home and several nephews.

In addition to her husband a daughter, Jennie, and two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Ketcham and Mrs. Henrietta Brown Webber, preceded her in death.
