Service for John William Hamer 89, who died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Lerch, near Martelle, was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's Lutheran church, preceded by a prayer service in the Smykil Home for Funerals. Rev. H. L. Buesing officiating.

Casket bearers, all grandsons, were Max, Harry, Elmer, Carl, Raymond and Roy Lerch.

Mr. Hamer, son of William and Fredericka Hamer, was born at Ruegen, Germany, Oct. 22, 1857, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith there. He was married in Germany to Wilhelmina Buhl on Dec. 18, 1882.

He and his wife and three children arrived in the United States on April 14, 1890, and went to Lowden. They farmed in that vicinity and in the Tipton and Lowden communities before moving near Anamosa in 1917. After the death of his wife in 1941, Mr. Hamer went to live with his eldest daughter, Mrs. Lerch. He was ill only a few days before his death.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Lerch, Mrs. Anna Workman, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Minnie Miller, Toddville, and Mrs. LeRoy Skeels, Anamosa; six sons, Charles, Iowa City; Paul, Otto, William and Henry, Cedar Rapids, and Emile, Anamosa; a brother, Charles, Cedar Rapids; a sister in Germany; 40 grandchildren, 28 grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
