Marie Katherine Kray Hein, 94, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2021, at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, as a result of general declining health.

Marie, the daughter of John and Emma Pauline Poppe Kray, was born May 4, 1927, at home in rural Monticello. Marie was baptized (June 1927) and confirmed (December 1941) at St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church for the beginnings of her faith journey.

She attended Cass No. 4, a rural school near Langworthy, in the Frog Hollow neighborhood. She graduated from Monticello High School in May 1945 having completed the Normal Training Program. Rather than teaching in a country school, she was hired by M.F. Carpenter to work at Monticello State Bank. He arranged for her to attend Cedar Rapids Business School, but called her back to work prior to finishing her program of training.

Marie left Monticello State Bank in 1950 when she married Melvin Hein. They moved to the Hein family farm in Richland Township. Marie was a dedicated farm wife - rearing four children, maintaining a large garden, raising chickens, vegetables and strawberries, and keeping the farm accounting "to the penny."

She was an active member of the Jones County Cowbelles and the Porkettes, promoting farm products. Marie served as a 4-H leader for the Richland Roc-Ettes, was active at First Presbyterian Church of Monticello and a member of the Rebecca Circle.

In 1982, Melvin and Marie moved to Monticello. Marie was a devoted founding member of the Presbyterian Pie Ladies. Marie continued to do the farm accounting and practiced diligently to master needed new computer skils.

Marie loved baking bread and making sure everyone that came into her house was well fed. She was a loving and devoted grandmother.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; her parents, John and Emma Kray; brothers, Lester, Albert and Gerhard Kray; and her beloved sister, Edna Kray Zumbach.

Left to cherish her memory are Mark (Debbie) Hein of Monticello, Pat (Dick) Bell of Coggon, Matt (Vicki) Hein of Monticello and Nancy (Vern) Atwater of Minneapolis, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Public visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. Everyone must wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status, to enter the funeral home and it must be properly fitted over the nose and mouth at all times. A private family service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the First Presbyterian Church.
